Avon Lake High Grad Named Lorain County Youth Of The Year

Mikayla Mitchell has a chance to compete for regional, state and national honors.

AVON LAKE, OH — Mikayla Mitchell, an Avon Lake High graduate, has been selected as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lorain County's 2020 Youth of the Year. She will now move on to regional Youth of the Year competition.

Mitchell, 17, graduated from Avon Lake High in January. She wants to work in forensic psychology and has started taking classes at Lorain County Community College. She has also been involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs for three years, two years as a member and one year as a staffer.

According to Club officials, Mitchell helps children develop leadership skills. She watches participants and instill values. She teaches kids how to express their emotions and how to handle tough situations, including using journaling to vent.

“Mikayla is a hard-working and passionate young lady who has a huge heart for the children she serves,” said Angelicia Brewer, site director for the Club at Avon Lake’s Westview Elementary School. “She goes above and beyond to make them feel loved.”

Mitchell enjoys drawing, hand lettering with motivational artwork, singing and playing the piano. She is also a runner and has been involved in sports and recreation programs at the Boys & Girls Clubs.
