Avon Lake Man Overdoses Three Times In 8 Days

AVON LAKE, OH — Police had to treat a 24-year-old Avon Lake man for drug overdoses twice in seven days, according to police records obtained by Patch. The two overdoses took place Jan. 11 and Jan. 18.

Police and fire units were sent to a Brookcrest Place address for reports of a possible overdose on Jan. 11. They found the 24-year-old and paramedics took the man to the Cleveland Clinic in Avon for treatment. Officers collected evidence from the scene.

On Jan. 18, police and fire units were again called to a Brookcrest Place address for a possible drug overdose. This time the 24-year-old was treated on the scene and did not have to be taken to Cleveland Clinic.

Last week, Patch reported that police were called to a home on Brookcrest Place for reports of a drug overdose. When they arrived, the 24-year-old suspect was awake, coherent and walking around. He refused medical treatment. The suspect is the same man in all three cases.

Ohio had the second highest state rate of drug overdose deaths in 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced in December 2017. More than 63,600 Americans died of overdoses last year, the deadliest year on record for the United States.

According to the CDC, the national rate for drug overdose deaths was 19.8 per 100,000. The 2016 rate of overdose deaths in Ohio was 39.1 per 100,000.

Overdose deaths last year may have outpaced 2016 in Ohio, according to data from the CDC. By May 2016, there were 3,606 overdose deaths statewide. By the same time in 2017, there were 5,097 overdose deaths, an increase of 43 percent.
