Avon Lake Plans Memorial For Beloved Tree Expert
Russell Beck was known for his Tree City USA baseball caps and extensive knowledge of the natural world.
AVON LAKE, OH — Avon Lake officials are planning a tree-based memorial for former resident and member of the Citizens Tree Commission Russell Beck.
Beck died last week in Oregon, surrounded by his daughter's family, the city confirmed.
While living in Avon Lake, Beck served on the Citizens Tree Commission for 23 years. He was first appointed to his post by Mayor Vince Urbin in 1997. Beck's experience as a biology teacher at Lakewood High School made him the "go-to guy" for information about plants, trees and wildlife.

"Russ was a kindhearted soul. He loved working with the city on its tree program. He fondly spoke about the farm and he always had a smile on his face. Such a good guy," said Joe Reitz, public works director, for Avon Lake.
City officials described Beck as scholarly, dignified, thoughtful and quiet. Despite his obviously vast knowledge of the natural world, his colleagues found him approachable and kind. He was active throughout the Avon Lake community, spreading his joy in myriad ways. Beck served as a poll worker at Eastview School and the American Legion.

"Russ loved to wear baseball hats, especially the one from the Tree USA event that was held in Avon Lake. He volunteered his green truck in Avon Lake's Memorial Day Parade, transporting members from the Citizens Tree Commission," the city said in a statement.
Joan Beck, Russ' wife, said her husband enjoyed working on the Tree Commission and he enjoyed being of service to his neighbors and peers.
To remember Beck's service to the community and his impact on others, Avon Lake officials plan to plant a black walnut tree in his honor. Ward Councilperson Jennifer Fenderbosch said black walnuts were Beck's favorite tree.
It is not yet clear which Avon Lake park will house the Beck memorial tree.
Donations for the memorial tree can be made by mailing a check payable to “Friends of the Park-Tree Program-Russell Beck” and addressed to City of Avon Lake, 150 Avon Belden Road, Avon Lake, Ohio 44012.
