Avon Lake Pulls Off Upset, Defeats Avon in Opening Round of High School Football Playoffs
The Avon Lake boys held on to a 27-26 win to advance to the regional semifinals.

AVON LAKE, OH - In what will surely be one of the most memorable chapters in a storied history, the Avon Lake Shoremen knocked off the undefeated, number one ranked Avon Eagles in the opening round of the 2016 high school football playoffs. The Avon Lake boys held on to a 27-26 win to advance to the regional semifinals.
The Shoremen rolled into Friday's game with a 7-3 record. They were taking on a juggernaut of an Avon team. The Eagles were unblemished, one of two teams in Division II, Region 6 with a 10-0 record. With rivalry games though, it never seems to matter what the record is.
The Shoremen were able to slay Goliath with a late interception in the endzone that secured a 27-26 win. It was one of several upsets throughout the region on Nov. 4, but none had the rippling ramifications of this game.
