A committee selected the 13 images and also the names for the pages. The calendar also includes a timeline of the eagles from building the nest, to laying eggs and having eaglets.
In November 2014, staff members at Redwood Elementary School observed a pair of bald eagles flying above their school in Avon Lake. Nestled in a tree behind the school, the start of what would be an enormous nest soon followed. Redwood students/staff were thrilled to welcome the pair of eagles to their campus.

From guest speakers to classroom research and activities, the staff at Redwood Elementary has used the opportunity to educate children about bald eagles. In 2014, the students voted to name the adult eagles Stars and Stripes. Since their arrival, the pair have had three sets of eaglets. Each eaglet was named by the Redwood students. In 2015, the eaglets were named: Hope and Pride because they are proud to have these eagles at Redwood and Hope they return each year. In 2016, the eaglets were named Liberty and Justice, representing the pledge the students/staff recite each day at the start of school. In 2016, the students decided to name the eaglets Maroon and Gold, to honor the Avon Lake City Schools’ colors.
In 2015, local resources were pulled together to install a camera for people all over the world to view the Redwood eagles, and their day-to-day life. Installation of the camera and equipment to install were donated by Lescher Tree Care. Through the use of the camera, the students have had the opportunity to watch two sets of eaglets hatch. The camera streams live on YouTube 24/7.

Redwood Elementary would like to thank our local naturalists and photographers for all their help putting this calendar together, especially Lou and Jean Gaeta and Cindy Duffala. Without their help this project would not be possible. Proceeds from this calendar will be put towards new equipment and resources for the eagles nest at Redwood Elementary.
The public is invited to watch the birds when school is not in session. Redwood Elementary serves nearly 425 students, grades Pre K to Grade 4. The students/staff are pleased to share the eagles with the public and are grateful for the opportunity to watch these majestic creatures each day.
