Avon Lake traveled to Amherst on Wednesday afternoon to lock up in a SWC battle in which the Lady Comets emerged victorious by a 3-0 score. For most of the first half the two teams were evenly matched in a scoreless struggle. Then in the waning minutes of the half, Amherst broke through on a goal by sophomore Ally Perkins and they carried 1-0 lead into the break.
To start the second half, a disastrous 8 minute span led to two goals for Amherst and put the game out of reach for the Shoregals. Both goals were scored by Lady Comet senior Sher Champe. Not only is Champe proficient on the soccer field, but she is also one of the top track runners in the state. She was a member of the 4 X 200 relay which finished 5th in the state, the 4 X 400 relay which finished 4th in the state, and she also ran in the 400 meter finals in which she finished 5th in state at the 2013 State Championship meet. In goal for Avon Lake was senior Amy Crooks who was credited with 6 saves. Avon Lake still leads the all time series which dates back 21 years to 1993 with a record of 11 wins – 8 losses – 4 ties.
In JV action, Avon Lake and Amherst played a spirited match that ended in a 1-1 draw. The Shoregal goal was scored by sophomore Nichole Nally. In the nets for the JV Shoregals was soph. goalie Elise Duvall. With the tie the JV record moves to 6-1-3.
