Avon May Purchase Historic Cahoon Home

Built by Avon's first permanent settler, Wilbur Cahoon, the dwelling is one of the oldest frame houses in Lorain County.

AVON, OH — The city will explore purchasing the historic Cahoon House on Stoney Ridge Road during a city council session on Monday. The residence was once home to Avon's first permanent settler — Wilbur Cahoon.

In a press release, the city said the purchase of the historic property would "serve multiple purposes." A city official said no major changes would be made to the Cahoon House, if the property came under city control.

The Cahoon House is one of the oldest frame homes in Lorain County. Wilbur Cahoon arrived in what is now Avon in 1814. He and his family stayed in a log cabin for nearly a dozen years. In 1825, Wilbur built a frame house, where he lived with his wife and eight children.

Cahoon's home on Stoney Ridge has withstood the gradual dilapidation of time thanks to some conscientious owners that have worked hard to preserve the house. The home has remained a single-family dwelling throughout its nearly two centuries of existence, according to the National Historic Register.

In 1966, Jean Fischer, and her late husband Dr. Delbert Fischer, purchased the Cahoon House. Due to inspired symmetry, the Fischers also had eight children, who were raised in the house.

In 1978, the Cahoon House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Jean Fischer still lives in the home today.

The city will discuss purchasing the home at Monday's meeting, which starts at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall.
