Avon Schools Join Elite Company, Named To AP Honor Roll

AVON, OH — The Avon Local Schools are in prestigious company. The district was just named one of 447 school systems, in both the U.S. and Canada, to the 8th Annual AP District Honor Roll.

Since 2015, the Avon Schools have had to increase the number of students enrolled in Advance Placement classes and improve or maintain the percentage of those students that score at least a 3 on AP Exams.

This is the third time the district has made the list. Currently, Avon High School offers 18 AP courses.

“We are proud to be recognized for this honor,” said Mike Laub, Avon Local Schools superintendent in a statement. “Our students and staff should be commended for their hard work. Our district takes a great deal of pride in the opportunities we provide to our students and we plan to continue to grow our AP opportunities.”

More than 4,000 colleges and universities, around the world, received AP scores for college credit in 2017. Good AP test scores can also land students in advanced placement college courses and can be weighed in the admissions process.

“Our high school administrative team continues to provide rigorous course offerings and we are fortunate that we have teachers that take on the additional training and hold these courses to a high standard for our students,” said Ben Hodge, Avon Local Schools assistant superintendent. “This is an incredible honor for our students as they continue to perform at high levels.”

Avon High School principal, Kristina Buller, also took time to congratulate her staff on the honor.

"The faculty of Avon High School continues to explore the College Board AP opportunities for our Eagles, as the curriculum is universally accepted at institutions of higher learning,” said Buller. “Each year, for the last six years I have been principal, our Board of Education and has permitted me to expand our offerings. Instruction in an AP course often parallels or exceeds college level courses. Avon students prove they have a propensity to thrive in these environments, although the courses are very demanding. I am incredibly pleased with the dedication of faculty who facilitate these courses. "

The specific criteria for inclusion the Annual AP District Honor Roll is as follows:

• AP participation must increase by at least 4 percent in large district, 6 percent in medium district and 11 percent in small district
• Increase or maintain the percentage of American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students that participate in AP Exams and maintain or increase the percentage of those students that score at least a 3 on one AP Exam.
• Improve or maintain the percentage of students scoring a 3 or higher on AP Exams. Data from 2017 and 2015 were compared, unless 70 percent of a district's students are already achieving 3 or higher on exams.
