Avon Students Take 3rd At Innovation Showdown

Two teams of high school students designed projects to address real-world problems. One of the designs won an award this month.

AVON, OH β€” Avon High students took third place at the annual Hyland Software Innovation Showdown. The contest pairs students with a professional mentor and the groups develop innovative products to address an issue in the world.

Two teams from Avon High took part in the event. Team Benny consisted of Katt Benny, Nick Boenau and Sam Fouts. Team Boesger was composed of Jacob Boesger, Joe Laforet and Matt LeHoty.

Both squads spent multiple nights meeting with their mentors to develop their projects.

Team Benny designed the ScrubTub, an in-home water filtration system allowing households to recycle and reuse waste water.

Team Boesger developed the iCan, a residential composting system, allowing households to compost food waste through convenient curbside pickup containers.

The Showdown concluded on November 16, with teams delivering their final presentations to a panel of Hyland judges. Both Avon High squads advanced past the initial round to the final round. Team Boesger took third place overall.

"Each team did an excellent job with their presentation," an Avon Schools spokesperson said.

Both Team Boesger and Team Benny were advised by Kyle Steller, an Avon High computer science, engineering and math teacher.
