Avon's Duck Tape Makes Changes To Stuck At Prom Contest

With proms canceled or in jeopardy nationwide, the company is changing the rules of its scholarships contest.

AVON, OH — Even decades-old traditions have been altered by the spread of the new coronavirus, COVID-19. With many proms canceled or in jeopardy, the Duck Brand's annual Stuck at Prom scholarship contest will now be a home-based contest.

Participating students can craft their Duck tape prom dress or tuxedo at home and then submit photographs of their creations to Duck Brand. The company will then award $25,000 in scholarships and prizes to the winners.

"Stuck at Prom has evolved from a simple contest into an annual tradition for creative teens to showcase their style, imagination and immense talents," said Ashley Luke, senior product manager at ShurTech Brands, the company that markets the Duck brand. "Our Duck Tape fans mean the world to us. As prom cancellations started rolling in across the country in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we felt it important to keep the tradition alive in these unprecedented times, while prioritizing the safety of our participants."

Here's How It Will Work

High school students in the U.S. and Canada can upload photos and videos of their dress or tuxedo (made of Duck tape). After the entry period, judges will pick 10 finalists, five in each category (dresses and tuxes).

Creations will be judged on criteria like use of color, workmanship, originality and design. Judges will also consider how Duck tape was used in the creation of the dress or tuxedo and accessories.

The public will then vote online to crown two grand prize winners — one for best dress and one for best tux. The two winners will each receive a $10,000 scholarship. Eight runners up will receive $500 scholarships and Duck brand prize packs worth $100.
