Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Gets Involved In Ohio Election

OBERLIN, OH — Ben & Jerry's co-founder Jerry Greenfield is getting involved in an Ohio election. Once an Oberlin College student, Greenfield said he sees the Buckeye State's politics as turning "sour," prompting him to get involved.

"I loved my time here. In fact, Ben & Jerry’s values are rooted in my experiences from Oberlin, but as I watch what’s happened to the state that taught me so much, one thing is clear -- Ohio’s state government has gone sour," Greenfield said.

Greenfield's message on state politics was sent through Steve Dettelbach's campaign for Ohio attorney general. The Ben & Jerry's co-founder said that while his company does not take a partisan stance, he is personally throwing his support behind Dettelbach.

"I don’t need to tell you how important Ohio will be in 2020; I’m here to tell you how critical electing Steve Dettelbach is this November," Greenfield noted. He added that the state's next attorney general will be responsible for overseeing the fairness of the 2020 election and enforcing new electoral maps drawn by Ohio's Apportionment Board.

Current Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, a Republican, is term-limited, preventing him from seeking re-election. DeWine is vacating his position to run for governor, anyways

Current State Auditor Dave Yost will serve as his party's replacement candidate for DeWine, while Dettelbach, a U.S. Attorney, is running for Democrats. Some political pundits view Dettelbach as the Democrats' best chance to gain an Ohio office in 2018.
