Cleveland Celebrates Superman Day, April 18

On April 18, 1938, Action Comics premiered with the first appearance of Superman, the superhero created by Clevelanders Siegel and Shuster. Cleveland will celebrate this tomorrow with Superman Day.

Comic books have been a huge part of my life since grade school.  I fell away for a bit when I was in college, but when I started dating my now-husband Scott, I rediscovered my love for it thanks to a copy of Dan Slott's She-Hulk he picked up on a whim.

Now, every Wednesday, we try to get to Comics Are Go! in Elyria for that week's delivery of new comics.  And the weeks we can't make it always seem a bit emptier. 

After I moved to Cleveland, I was astonished by the comic greats that grew up in this area. One or two wouldn't have surprised me - many cities have their talent.  But Cleveland and Northeast Ohio have been called home by a multitude of award-winning, critically acclaimed writers and artists like Pekar, Bendis, Azzarello and Vaughan.

Before all of them, though, there were two young Clevelanders: Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster who put our city in the pop culture history books with their creation of Superman.

On April 18, 1938 the Man of Steel made his first appearance in Action Comics #1. And in honor of this anniversary, the City of Cleveland has declared tomorrow Superman Day.
