Rain Puts a Damper on Gardening Plans

Got the rained-out gardening blues? Me, too.

If you live to garden and garden to live like me, well, this past month has been pure torture. After surviving one of the coldest and snowiest winters on record, I’ve been chomping at the bit to get outside and dig, weed, divide, plant and design… my idea of a perfect day.

However, Mother Nature is turning a blind eye to my eagerness.

Four solid weeks of rain have been kind to plants, but cruel to avid gardeners like me. Every day, my peonies grow another two inches. If I don’t get my peony support hoops placed in the next day or two, I’m doomed to a dreaded case of hopelessly flopping flora!

My hostas have burst forth into the lushest, fullest, healthiest specimens I have ever seen. They’re loving the rain and the extra nourishment it brings.

And the flowering trees are just beginning to show their appreciation for all the extra moisture with a show of blooms that promises to be nothing short of spectacular.

How, then, does this gardener grow? Like all the other “plant nuts” out there, I’m wilting, whining and pining away for just a few days of sun so I can get out there and get started on my dream garden. Gardening is like baseball. Every year, hope springs eternal for that perfect season. Now if I could only get out there and play ball!
