Too Drunk to Drive
If you are too drunk to drive home and your boss pays your cab fare, do you have to pay her back? Is that the real question?
Meredyth,
Good Morning - I have a question on proper etiquette. I went to a function with a bunch of people from work on Friday, my bosses, staff etc. Had a fantastic time, but unfortunately drank to much and was an hour and half from home. One of my bosses got me a taxi cab and paid for it. A nice chunk of change and something I could not otherwise afford, but I feel obligated to give the money back on Monday. Do you agree?

Dear Obligated,
Etiquette is a code of behavior that delineates expectations for social behavior according to contemporary conventional norms within a society, social class, or group. So, if ANYONE, especially your boss, pays for your taxi because you were too intoxicated to drive, you should pay them back. If you couldn't afford the taxi ride from the party that was an hour and a half away from your house, perhaps you should not have been drinking, with no way home.
If you are a person that is obviously concerned about etiquette, I know that you are then also concerned about drinking "too much" at a work event, party or gathering. A work party is a party that is an extension of work. This should be an opportunity to advance your career and work relationships. Talk to your bosses at the event and let them know that you are a really great person, in and out of the office. This way, when it is time to make promotions, they think of you in a positive light. An office party can benefit or hurt your career, it matters how you handle this business situation in a social atmosphere.
An hour and a half cab ride would be quite expensive, but not as expensive as drinking and driving, a ticket or a DUI. Had your boss NOT called you that taxi, your taxi fare would seem like chump change compared to the alternative. Tomorrow morning walk into your boss and give her the money with a cup of coffee and thank her for thinking so much of you, and then let her know it won't happen again!
