It seems everywhere you look these days you see QR codes. You know those black squares with a bunch of squiggly lines (see more technical description below) that you see in ads. QR or Quick Response Codes are rapidly becoming the best way to share information - usually between businesses and consumers.
QR Codes were created in 1994 in Japan and were used by Toyota to track parts in their vehicle manufacturing operations. The code is a specific matrix barcode, or two-dimensional code, readable by dedicated QR barcode readers or smartphones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded can be a URL, text, or other data. The technology has seen a large uptake in Japan and South Korea, but has been slower to catch on in the West.
Usually you will see QR codes in magazine ads, but lately they have been appearing on business cards or real estate signs, I have even seen them on tee-shirts! The uses and possibilities are endless, but the most common is some kind of "special" offer or discount is given to those that scan the QR code; and it is usually connected to a website.
