Car Thieves Caught In Avon Lake

An off-duty police officer spotted a pair of sketchy men examining vehicles parked throughout the city and called dispatch.

AVON LAKE, OH — An off-duty cop may have prevented some crimes of opportunity last week. The officer spotted a pair of sketchy guys checking out parked cars throughout the city and phoned dispatch to tip them off. That tip led to arrests. Read on for more information on that incident and others from last week.

Animal Attack, May 17 - A woman reported that her daughter had been bitten in the leg by her ex-husband's dog. The bite wound was minor and the dog's shots were all up to date.

Missing Person, May 21 - A woman flagged down police to say her 18-year-old daughter had stormed off during an argument and was now missing. Officers searched the area but the mother called soon after to report the daughter had returned home.

Drug Investigation, May 21 - Police received a call from an Avon Lake resident whose ex-boyfriend had locked themselves in a bathroom and was high on drugs. The ex was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

OVI, May 22 - An officer on patrol spotted a 2006 white Toyota parked on someone's tree lawn, its front bumper kissing a utility pole. The driver appeared to be passed out behind the wheel of the running vehicle. The driver was charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence and failure to maintain reasonable control.

Menacing, May 24 - A prank went way awry last week. An Avon Lake juvenile got a text saying she should skip school or she would be hurt. The creepy text came from an unknown phone number. The juvenile and her parents reported the matter to police. The sender of the text, another juvenile, was located. The suspect said the text was meant as a prank, but the matter has been referred to the school resource officer.

Animal Complaint, May 20 - An Avon Lake woman's golden doodle bit her neighbor on the arm. The neighbor was treated at the hospital for a small cut.

Recovered Stolen Vehicle, May 25 - An off-duty Avon Lake cop spotted a pair of opportunistic prowlers checking out vehicles on Landerwood Drive. The officer called dispatch and reported the matter, providing a description of the men. Police responded to the scene and located two men matching the description on Jaycox Road. A third man was with the two suspects and was found in a vehicle reported stolen from Cleveland. All three of the men were juveniles and were arrested.
