Census Says Avon Lake Slightly Older With a Lot More Homes

Housing units increased dramatically, but out average family size decreased.

Avon Lake had a marked increase of population from 18,284 in 2000 to 22,581 in 2010. New information from the 2010 U.S. Census released May 12 indicates while housing units and population increased in proportion to the population, much of Avon Lake hasn’t changed demographically.

HOUSING

In 2010, Avon Lake had 9,411 total housing units. Of those, 8,900 were occupied (94.6 percent). Of the occupied units, 7,317 were owner-occupied and 1,583 units were rentals. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.05.

In 2000, there were 6,987 housing units; 87 percent of those being owner-occupied. The average household size was 2.7 and the average family size was slightly larger at 3.14.

RACE

In 2010, 97 percent of residents in Avon Lake consider themselves white alone while 327 residents (1 percent) listed themselves as black/African American.  Asians accounted for .4 percent and 116 residents listed themselves as American Indian or Alaska Native. Hispanic/Latino was not considered a race in the census, however 544 residents identified themselves as Hispanic/Latino.

In 2000, 97.3 percent identified themselves as while, .5 percent as black or African American and 1 percent as Asian. Hispanics/Latinos accounted for 1.2 percent.

AGE

Avon Lake has grown older in the past 10 year. In 2010, the media age was 41.9 and 1,290 (5.7 percent) was under the age of 5. Seniors 65 and over accounted for 14.4 percent of the population.

In 2000, the median age was 38.4 with 7 percent under the age of 5 and 11. 6 percent of the population over the age over the age of 65.

SEX

Avon Lake has 10,901 males (48.3 percent). Of those, 14.6 percent are under the age of 19. The median age for a male is 40.4. Females account for 11,680 (51.7 percent) of the population. There are slightly less females under the age of 19 with only 13.6 percent. 

In 2000, men gained a small percentage of ground with an increase to 48.9 percent of the population. Women accounted for 51.1 percent .
