City Says Unregistered Landscapers Can Be Fined $200 A Day

City cracking down on unregistered landscapers who could be a liability to property owners.

The will be cracking down on un-registered landscaping and tree care contractors working within city limits and are asking residents to make sure the contractors they hire are registered.

“People need to know if the contractors they hire are registered,” City Engineering Manager Joe Reitz said. “Contractors that do not have insurance may be a liability to the property owner if they are injured.”

Contractors that mow lawns, plant shrubs, and do tree work must be registered by the Engineering Department by July 11, 2011 or they will be issued stop work orders if caught and face fines of $200 per day which double for each additional time they are caught, Reitz said.

Contractors that install patio’s, decks or sprinkler systems in addition to lawn mowing are required to be registered by both the Building Department before they obtain building permits and the before work begins. The Engineering Department does not require permits to work on properties only that the contractor doing the work is registered.  If a resident want to know if their landscaper or tree service is registered please call the Avon Lake Engineering Department at 440-930-4101.
