Cleveland Clinic Avon Is 1 Of Ohio's Safest Hospitals

AVON, OH — The Cleveland Clinic Avon is one of the safest hospitals in Ohio, according to the spring 2020 ratings released by the Leapfrog Group. Only 43 hospitals in Ohio received an 'A' grade for safety.

"While all hospitals have encountered new challenges and unfamiliar situations in recent months, Cleveland Clinic appreciates its caregivers for their persistence in providing compassionate care and reducing avoidable harm to patients. Cleveland Clinic thanks them for the level of quality, safety and patient experience in all care settings," the hospital system said in a statement celebrating the sterling grade.

Safety grades are released by the nonprofit organization twice per year, in the spring and the fall. The ratings of more than 2,600 hospitals focus on accidents, injuries and infections, and help to assess how well a facility prevents medical errors and other harm to patients.

It's worth noting the metrics used to determine this spring's hospital grades originated from safety data reported for periods ending in 2018 and 2019. The report does not take into account the strain the new coronavirus outbreak is placing on some hospitals where staff are experiencing shortages of drugs and protection equipment.

Cleveland Clinic CEO Dr. Tom Mihaljevic recently addressed Ohioans in an open letter, telling them the hospital system remains committed to patient safety during the COVID-19 outbreak.

"By acting quickly in the early stages of the pandemic, we maintained Cleveland Clinic’s safe environment for our patients, visitors, and caregivers," Mihaljevic said in his letter.
