College Advisers Available To Avon High Students

The aid comes from the College Now Advisors program.

From College Now Greater Cleveland: As a new school year gets underway, it is time to remind you of the services that College Now Greater Cleveland offers to your students and families at Avon High School. A College Now advisor will be at your school throughout the school year to provide high school students and their families with advice and guidance on postsecondary plans.

At College Now, advisors are uniquely trained to match individuals of all ages and levels of experience with the educational pathways to wealth-creating occupations. This is not a “one size fits all” approach. For some the educational pathway might be a four-year degree in accounting; for others, a two-year nursing degree; and still for others, an 18-month welding apprenticeship.

College Now advisors meet students where they are, assess their education and career experience and goals, and match them with the opportunities that are their best fit.

Your College Now advisor will provide guidance and resources to your students to prepare for and explore postsecondary educational opportunities, including two-year, four-year and certificate programs. With the help of your advisor, students develop a college and career plan by:

  • Determining skills and interests;
  • Exploring career fields and coinciding academic programs;
  • Navigating the admissions process, and
  • Registering for required tests.

Additionally, your College Now advisor will offer guidance on financial aid, including:

  • Learning about financial aid options;
  • Completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), federal, state, institutional and private grants, loans and scholarships, and
  • Evaluating financial aid award packages.

Your College Now advisor’s goal is to help students secure maximum financial aid with minimal loan debt. As part of this work, your College Now advisor will also help students with scholarship research and applications, including for the College Now Scholarship. Winners are selected based on recommendations by the advisor, and students must meet our criteria for academic performance (high school grades and SAT/ACT test scores) and have financial need. Your school’s College Now advisor will have more details on eligibility and requirements.

Along with in-school time for students and advisors to meet and discuss postsecondary plans, College Now also offers afterschool programming for students focused on ACT/SAT preparation, as well as college and career exposure through experiential learning trips and activities. These include college visits throughout the region and career visits to exciting and interesting local employers. Please contact your College Now advisor to learn about afterschool programs offered at your school.

Beyond the services that College Now provides your students, however, are services that can help these students’ entire families. College Now works with students as young as middle school through adult aged individuals, offering the same college and career advising services that students receive in high schools, as well as student loan debt counseling for those burdened with debt. College Now’s Adult Programs and Services can be found at College Now’s Resource Center in Tower City in downtown Cleveland and at College Now’s Barberton office. For more information, visit the Adult Programs and Service page on College Now’s website.

Please check with your school’s office to connect with your College Now advisor.
