Coronavirus In Avon Lake: 11 Dead, 63 Cases

Mayor Greg Zilka said another resident died from the new coronavirus this week.

AVON LAKE, OH — At least 11 Avon Lake residents have died from the new coronavirus since the outbreak began, according to Mayor Greg Zilka. At least 63 residents have tested positive for COVID-19.

Zilka said on Tuesday that the city had not seen a new case of COVID-19 in nearly a week. However, a person who previously tested positive for the virus died this week, bringing the city's total deaths to 11.

"We mourn the loss," Zilka said in a statement.

One of the areas hardest hit in Avon Lake is the Main Street Care assisted living home. As of last week, the facility had at least one resident who had tested positive for COVID-19 in their complex. Since the outbreak began, at least 11 residents and seven staff members have tested positive for the virus, the Ohio Department of Health reported.

While the state health department does not tally the number of deaths at individual nursing homes, it did say 22 Lorain County assisted living residents have died from COVID-19 since the outbreak began.
