Coronavirus In Avon Lake: 14 New Cases, 1 Death

AVON LAKE, OH — Health officials confirmed 14 new cases of COVID-19 in Avon Lake last week, Mayor Greg Zilka announced Wednesday.

Most of the new cases are among residents in their 20s, the mayor said. Since the start of the outbreak, at least 111 residents have contracted the virus.

A man in his 90s, who earlier contracted COVID-19, died this week, Zilka said. Thirteen Avon Lake residents have died due to complications created by the virus.

Across Lorain County, there were 152 new cases of COVID-19, Zilka noted. "Numbers are definitely up," he said.

Lorain County is now classified as "red" or "Level 3" by the Ohio Department of Health. That means COVID-19's spread is very high locally. Masks are mandatory in all public spaces in Lorain County.

Avon Mayor Bryan Jensen urged residents to be "heroes" and wear masks to prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed.

The mandate will remain in effect until Lorain County's spread of COVID-19 decreases. Counties are reevaluated every Thursday by the Ohio Department of Health.
