Daily Inmate Population Decreased At Lorain Sheriff's Jail
Arrests made by the Avon and Avon Lake police departments were down in 2017 versus 2016.

AVON, OH — The Lorain County Sheriff's jail was used less in 2017 than it was in 2016, according to data contained in the sheriff's annual report. Arrests by police departments within the county were down significantly in 2017, leading to less inmates at the jail.
In 2016, Avon Police had 206 arrested people housed at the sheriff's jail. Avon Lake Police had 78 arrested people during that same time period. In 2017, Avon Police had 167 arrested people at the jail, while Avon Lake had 76.
The two departments were indicative of an overall trend downward in arrests. Among the various departments and agencies operating in Lorain County last year, including the U.S. Marshals and Ohio State Patrol, there were only a total of 7,399 arrests, according to the Lorain County Sheriff's annual jail report.

In 2016, there were 8,040 arrests.
This is the continuation of a trend started in 2015, when arrests dipped to 8,064. They fall to 8,040 the next year and took a bigger slide in 2017.

The majority of people booked at the jail are still male, though the number of men being booked was down in 2017. "Male bookings decreased 7% from 6037 in 2016 to 5,627 in 2017," the report said. "Female bookings decreased 12% from 2,003 in 2016 to 1,772 in 2017."
The Average Daily Inmate Population decreased 7 percent from 453 in 2016 to 421 in 2017, the report added.
