Despite Delays, Salvation Army Retail Store Going Up This Summer

Salvation Army building engineers will seek final approval June 15.

Make way, the Salvation Army is coming to Avon. 

This July, planning officials expect the evangelical Christian organization to break ground and build a 35,000 square foot store on the vacant lot located directly behind . 

The Salvation Army Family Store, as it’s called, will sell quality clothing, furniture and household goods at bargain prices, and a bulk of the proceeds will go to fund the organization’s adult rehabilitation program, according to the Salvation Army website.

Construction was approved over three months ago by the , but, due to bad weather and design modifications, architects will have to go back in front of the planning commission board on June 15 to get final approval. 

During the January meeting, mock-ups and computer generated models of what the store would look like were provided, but, according to Salvation Army representative Captain Patrick Wilson, the plan has undergone several redesigns and will better complement the Route 83 shopping district.

“They do own the property now,” planning coordinator Jim Piazza said. “Since they got the initial approval, they closed on it, they own it and I would assume they’re going to begin construction as soon as they get this second plan approved early this summer.”
