Discolored Water In Avon Lake? Could Be Hydrant Flushing

The city is moving neighborhood to neighborhood flushing hydrants.

AVON LAKE, OH — Discolored water coming out the taps? It could be hydrant flushing in the neighborhood.

Avon Lake's hydrant flushing program is in full swing, with crews moving neighborhood to neighborhood flushing hydrants. The process can cause discoloration in water, so don't be shocked if the tap starts spewing unclear H20.

"If water coming out of your tap is discolored, keep running until it's clear before using or drinking it. This includes washing machines – some of the sediments kicked up by the flushing process could stain clothes," the city said on its website.

Hydrant flushing is weather dependent and should continue throughout the summer, the city said. The process of flushing all city hydrants started in the spring. The flushing process historically starts on the east side of town and moves west.

Residents who are signed up on to the city's Code Red notification program should be alerted before flushing begins in their area.
