AVON LAKE, OH — As a school bus dropped off kids near the Miller Road-Electric Boulevard intersection, a car passed the stopped bus, ignoring the flashing red lights and stop sign, according to a police report obtained by Patch.

The school bus driver got the car's license plate and reported the incident to police. The driver also had a description of the man piloting the other car.

Officers tracked down the car and spoke to the driver, a 47-year-old Avon Lake man, who was then cited for not stopping for a stopped school bus.

Police said the man was given a court date of Feb. 4 in the Avon Lake Municipal Court. The man has entered a plea of not guilty.

Drivers failing to stop for school buses has been a persistent problem across the nation. In nearby Strongsville, last year, the city implemented a policy allowing police to randomly board and then ride along on a school bus. That gives officers leeway to issue citations whenever a driver breaks the law and ignores a stopped school bus.
