Driver Cited For Blowing Past Stopped School Bus In Avon Lake

AVON LAKE, OH — When school started back, police departments around Northeast Ohio posted graphics on social media showing the proper way to drive near buses. At least one driver in Avon Lake must have missed the message.

On September 25, an Avon Lake school bus driver told police a car drove around her bus while students were crossing on Walker Road. The driver, a 53-year-old Lakewood woman, told police the bus did not activate its lights or stop sign until she had already started driving around the stopped bus, Avon Lake police records said.

The driver was given a citation for not stopping for a school bus, according to Avon Lake police records.

Drivers failing to stop for school buses has been a persistent problem across the nation. In nearby Strongsville, the city implemented a policy allowing police to randomly board and then ride along on a school bus. That gives officers leeway to issue citations whenever a driver breaks the law and ignores a stopped school bus.
