Driver Sentenced For Killing Avon Lake Bicyclist

AVON LAKE, OH — The woman who pleaded guilty to hitting a bicyclist in Avon Lake with her car, killing him, has been sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison. Sharan Carr, 65, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide in November 2019.

On June 6, 2019, Richard "Randy" Knilans was bicycling down Lake Road, near the Avon Lake-Sheffield Lake border, when he was hit by a car. Police found him on the sidewalk and had him flown to MetroHealth Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The car that hit Knilans did not stop at the scene, police said after the crash. Carr was later identified by police as the suspected driver and taken into custody. She was initially charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, failure to stop after a crash, failure to use reasonable control and operating a vehicle under the influence.

Carr's charges were later reduced as part of a plea deal.

At her arraignment on Friday, Carr apologized to Knilans' family and said she wished she could change everything, according to WKYC.
