Drones Used In Online Banking Scam In Avon Lake, Resident Believe

A resident told Avon Lake police they think drones played a key part in thieves trying to break into their banking accounts.

AVON LAKE, OH — Drones may have helped scammers trying to rip off an Avon Lake man last week, according to what a resident told police.

On June 11, a Lake Road resident reported seeing drones hovering near his house. The resident thought this suspicious and contacted police.

At 8 a.m. the next day, PNC Bank contacted the resident and told him someone had made multiple attempts to log into his online banking accounts. PNC froze the resident's accounts and no money was taken. The bank said it was investigating the situation.

The resident then contacted police to update them on what had happened. He told investigators he believes the drones may have been part of the attempt to get into the man's bank accounts, according to police records. Police said the resident was using his home internet network to do online banking while the drones were outside.

Investigators are following up on a few leads in the case, according to police records.
