Drunken Driver Hits Fire Hydrant In Avon Lake: Police

Police said a 72-year-old, under the influence, crashed into a fire hydrant last week.

AVON LAKE, OH — A drunken 72-year-old man crashed his car into a fire hydrant last weekend, police said.

At 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, a patrolling officer spotted a car accident on Lake Road, near Avondale Street. A Chevrolet Corvette had crashed into a fire hydrant just off the road, according ot police records.

Police spoke to the driver, a 72-year-old man from Lorain, and determined he was under the influence of alcohol. The man refused to be taken to the hospital, so he was taken to the Avon Lake Police Department where he was charged with operating a vehicle impaired and failing to maintain reasonable control.

Police records indicate the man blew a .172 or greater on a breath test.

The man made his first appearance in Avon Lake Municipal Court in April and pleaded not guilty to the charges.
