Fireworks Mishap Starts Small Fire In Avon Lake

The July 4th holiday wasn't all grilled burgers and hot dogs. One man started a small fire outside of his house.

AVON LAKE, OH — Fireworks can be dangerous. A local man started a fire outside his home on Independence Day, unaware of embers that were still smoldering on the front steps of his house. Read on for more information on that incident and others from recent weeks.

Fireworks Complaint, July 4 — Police were called to a residence on Monaco Place for reports of a structure fire. When officers arrived, there was a small fire on the front steps of the residence. Small embers were burning there and the homeowner was unaware of their smoldering existence. The fire had been started because of fireworks that had been set off that evening. A fire extinguisher, a garden hose, and a fire department water hose were used to completely extinguish the fire.

Theft, July 5 — A resident complained that a contractor failed to perform his agreed-upon duties, even after receiving payment. The contractor's phone is no longer in service and the resident has been unable to get in contact with the contractor. The resident had paid $4,500 for deck work.

Theft, July 5 — A stand up paddle board was stolen from a Colony Drive residence.

Fireworks Complaint, July 7 — Police cited a resident on Walker Road for setting off fireworks.

Assisting Another Agency, July 7 — The Erie County Sheriff's Office contacted Avon Lake Police after a suspect eluded the sheriffs. The vehicle the suspect was in was registered to an Avon Lake resident and police arrested the suspect at his home.

Fraud, July 7 — Someone opened a credit card account using a Surrey Lane resident's personal information.

Disorderly Conduct, July 9 — A caller reported a man slumped in the seat of a tan Oldsmobile. The vehicle was parked near the basketball hoops at Bleser Park, 32800 Electric Blvd. Police tracked down the vehicle and spoke with the man. The vehicle had been disabled for several weeks and the man was intoxicated. He was taken into custody for disorderly conduct.
