Fly Your Flag at Half-Staff on Sept. 11
Day is one of two when flags should be at half-staff from sunrise to sunset

Patriot Day is Sunday, Sept. 11 and the United States flag should be flown at half-staff from sunrise (7:03 a.m.) to sunset (7:43 p.m.).
“It is a solemn occasion and a chance to honor those who died and the heroes that emerged that day,” John Shondel, Sergeant-at-Arms for the said.
Shondel has to notify residents when to fly the flag at half staff.

“On this day, it is appropriate to fly your American flag at half staff from sunrise to sunset,” Shondel said in his most recent "Operation Fly the Flag" email alert. “Many Americans will also be showing that they remember by displaying other memorial flags and decorations at their homes and offices. The day will be marked with memorial services and events to honor the service men and women all across the country.”
A joint resolution was approved Dec. 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), where Congress has designated Sept. 11 of each year as Patriot Day.

The second traditional full day of flying the flag at half staff is Dec. 7, Pearl Harbor Day. On Memorial Day, the United States flag is flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon.
Shondel said those with wall-mounted flag that can't be lowered can choose an alternate display of attaching a black streamer, the width of a stripe and as long as "fly" of the flag, just below the finial.
