Fraud Schemes Cost Avon Lake Residents, Businesses Money

An elderly resident and a local business owner both got ensnared by credit card scams.

AVON LAKE, OH — Credit card scams are a dangerous possibility looming over both residents and businesses. The end of March proved that, as both a local business owner and an elderly resident had their personal information stolen and used to make illicit purchases.

Fraud, March 16 — A 75-year-old Titus Lane woman was the victim of credit card fraud. Someone in New York City was able to buy some items using the woman's personal information, according to the police report.

Property Damage, March 19 — A garbage truck may have damaged a Norman Lane man's Toyota. The man told police he thought the damage happened when the truck was picking up refuse.

Assisting Another Agency, March 20 — An Avon Lake business owner lost one of their BP gas cards while in the Pittsburgh-area. Within 14 days, more than $2,000 of charges were made to the card. Pittsburgh Police are investigating the incident.

Traffic Complaint, March 21 — Police did a random registration check on a car driving down Pin Oak Parkway. The driver had a suspended license, so police stopped the car. Officers gave the driver a citation for driving with a suspended license.

Warrant Service, March 22 — Officers went to Rocky River to take custody of a person wanted in Avon Lake Municipal Court.

Criminal Damaging, March 21 — Someone broke out the rear window of a Woodcrest Court woman's Ford.

Criminal Damaging, March 23 — Someone punctured all four tires on a Lake Road resident's car. Police don't currently have any suspects in the crime.
