Grant Will Boost School Resource Officers In Avon

Two police stationed inside Avon schools will have funding for their curriculum, partly thanks to the state.

AVON, OH — Avon Police's School Resource Officer program just got a boost from the state. As part of a $3 million grant that was divvied between 152 sheriffs offices and police departments in Ohio, Avon Police received $20,585.

The money is earmarked specifically for either a D.A.R.E. or School Resource Officer program. In Avon's case, it will be used to partially fund instruction by a pair of officers placed in Avon High and Avon Middle schools.

"We're absolutely very grateful," Police Chief Richard Bosley told Patch. "The Attorney General’s office has always been eager to assist local law enforcement."

The grant money will be used to fund local programming instructed by Avon's two in-school Resource Officers, Bosley said.

“Age-appropriate substance abuse prevention education every year, at every grade level is key,” said Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine in a statement. “Evidence-based prevention education helps students develop the skills they need to make good decisions, stay drug-free, and live healthier lives.”
