Here's Why You'll Hear Sirens In Avon Lake On March 24

Don't get your hearing checked. Those are sirens you're hearing.

AVON LAKE, OH — Avon Lake and Avon residents will hear sirens blaring on March 24. That's no reason to panic, though.

The Ohio Emergency Management Agency and National Weather Service will conduct a statewide severe weather tornado drill and siren test at 9:50 a.m. Lorain County will also test its notification system with voice, text and email messages.

The National Weather Service urged all Ohioans to follow health and safety guidelines during the tornado test. That includes wearing face masks and maintaining social distance.

"If that's not possible during the tornado test, then consider participating by simply sheltering-in-place or discussing sheltering options/plans among co-workers/family members. Every school, citizen, and business is encouraged to participate in the drill," the agency said in a statement.

Ohio Severe Weather Awareness Week is March 21 through March 27. During the week, Ohioans are encouraged to prepare or update their emergency weather plan, and to review what to do in the event of a flash flood, severe thunderstorm, tornado, and lightning.
