It's Street Day! It's Street Day!!

No, this is not some unknown holiday.  Street Day (July 20th) is a big event for some of us walking in the Komen 3 Day.  This is the day we learn what the walk route will be.  The route is not a big secret, but it is not set until it is known if there will be road closures along the suggested route.  Even now it is liable to change should there be severe weather that floods the roads or water main breaks.  Anything is possible, a fire, a car accident.  Anything that can close a road can change our route.

But what is Street Day.  Rain or shine on the 2nd Saturday before the walk some of us gather to walk portions of the route.  The route is divided into 6 groups and we walk our portion and post notices on the homes to let people know we are coming.  We do this for several reasons.  We want people to come out and cheer us on, but we also want them to know so we are not disrupting their day.  If someone has to be somewhere on Saturday morning we want them to be aware that several hundred people are going to be in the area.  We do everything to not interfere with people's day to day activities or a child's activity.  Occasionally, police will stop traffic to allow all of us to cross at one time, so this can cause delays.

We love to see the people out supporting us.   Along the way many will provide us with water, candy or other snacks.  Just the enthusiasm they provide is heartwarming.

For the walkers Street Day means that walk is right out there on the horizon.  It will be happening soon and we are ready.

So if you find a note taped to your mailbox on Saturday, get ready, we will be back in force beginning August 2nd and we hope to see your cheering us on.

Note:  Should we have thunderstorms on July 20th, Street Day will be moved to July 27th.
