Killed Avon Lake Bicyclist Identified By Police

Avon Lake police released the name of a 66-year-old man that was killed while riding his bicycle on Lake Road on Friday.

AVON LAKE, OH - The 66-year-old bicyclist that was killed in a car accident on Lake Road on Friday was Richard “Randy” Knilans, Avon Lake police announced on Tuesday morning.

Police withheld Knilans name after the crash so they could notify his family of his passing. Officers successfully reached out to each of his loved ones and then released his name.

"We would ... like to express our sincere heartfelt condolences to the victim's family members for their tragic loss," Avon Lake Police Sgt. Reed Reikowski said in a statement on Friday.

Knilans was an active member of the Avon Lake community. He was a longtime member of the Planning Commission, Zoning Board and the Historic Preservation Committee, according to his obituary on legacy.com. He also coached his children's baseball and basketball teams.

Knilans was hit by a car on Lake Road on Thursday night while riding his bicycle near the Sheffield Lake border. Police found Knilans on the sidewalk with serious injuries. He was flown to MetroHealth Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver, Sharan A. Carr, 64, of Sheffield Lake, was intoxicated at the time of the crash and charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, police announced Friday.

Carr was arrested later Thursday night in her hometown after an officer pulled her over, police said. She was initially charged with failure to stop after a crash, failure to use reasonable control and operating a vehicle under the influence.
