Local School Plans STEM Week for K-8 Students
Ten local organizations provide Science, Technology, Engineering and Math lessons and activities to Holy Trinity School students in one week
Holy Trinity School, in Avon, OH has planned its second annual STEM WEEK for its 475 students in K-8 from May 1st through May 5th. While STEM focused instruction and activities are incorporated into regular curriculum, pull out enrichment programs, science fairs and participation in the St. Ignatius Science Olympiad, the school has organized this immersion STEM Week to further develop their students’ interests and skills by bringing in local experts to share their knowledge, exhibits and passion for different subject matters. Lorain County Metroparks will be conducting presentations on “Predators of the Sky”, “Earth, Every Day” and “Let’s Hear it for Herps.” COSI(Center of Science and Industry) on Wheels will present “It’s Simply Chemistry.” The Cleveland Museum of Natural History will conduct multiple presentations on "Matters of Science," “Hidden Kingdoms,” “H20 is Awesome!,” “Force and Motion,” “Cells,” “Weather,” and “Disease Detectives.” The Akron Global Polymer Academy will present “Polymers” and The Carnegie Science Center will present “Rockin Robots.”
All students in K-8 will also be taking field trips to various attractions and establishments during the week. Kindergarten and first grade students will be travelling to the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center and the French Creek Nature Center to learn about local animals and their habitats. Second grade students will construct a car and learn about force and motion using the Western Reserve Model Grand Prix at the Cleveland History Center. Third grade students will investigate how changes in aquatic environments affect animal life and then will use the STEM model to create a fish to live in a special habitat. Fourth grade students will learn about rocks & minerals and the solar system at the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center. Fifth grade students will explore the “Science of Sound” at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Sixth grade students will learn about the history and geometry of carousels at the Cleveland History Center in University Circle. Seventh grade students will conquer energy and how it transfers at the Great Lakes Science Center while our 8th grade students watch a live dissection of a sheep’s heart and learn about cardiac anatomy, function and diseases at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
