Loose Dogs Menace Children In Avon Lake

Two dogs were chasing children on Vanda Avenue. One of the animals had to be corralled by police.

AVON LAKE, OH — Loose dogs have again wreaked havoc in part of Avon Lake, police say. On Sept. 7, two dogs were reportedly chasing children in the residential area of Vanda Avenue. No one was injured during the incident.

When police arrived on the scene, one of the dogs ran back to its home and was secured. The other dog had to be corralled and taken to a kennel. It was later released back to its owner.

The next day, Sept. 8, officers tracked down both dog owners and cited them for dogs at large and dog registration required. The two owners live at the same residence and share rent, police said. Both are scheduled to appear in court Thursday. (To stay up to date on local stories, subscribe to the Patch Avon-Avon Lake newsletter. A spokesperson for Avon Lake Police said the department is also pursuing nuisance designations against both animals. If the designations are accepted, restrictions would be placed on the owners in regards to how they treat and secure their animals.

This is at least the second loose dog incident in the city in the past two or three weeks. While walking on the paths near Weiss Field in late August, an Avon Lake woman was attacked by a loose dog. The animal ran out of the bushes and jumped on the woman. The woman tried to push the dog away, but the animal bit her on the arm and scratched her leg before fleeing. The woman did not see anyone else in the park and could not locate the dog owner.

Avon Lake Police have frequently asked residents to keep all dogs on leashes while walking through parks, specifically to avoid incidents like this. Officers are still searching for the dog's owner.
