Lorain County Fair Offers One Last Blast of Summer

Country stars Billy Currington and Easton Corbin to perform

As the days tick down before school starts, now is the time to savor every remaining moment of summer break.

Avon students who aren’t quite ready to face the start of another school year can do just that before the bells ring.

The 166th Annual Lorain County Fair kicks off Monday in Wellington, which has been the fair’s home since 1941.

The fair is seven consecutive jam-packed days, with competitions in areas including animal showmanship, arts and crafts; baking; photography and collectibles; fruits and vegetables; and flowers.

One fun contest is the hay bale contest, judged over the weekend. The winners showed creativity and a sense of fun.

A diverse lineup of musical acts will take the stage as well with headliners Easton Corbin (tickets $18) and Billy Currington (tickets $25) playing Monday and Tuesday evenings, respectively, and a smorgasbord of entertainers scheduled to sing, dance and jam throughout the week free of charge.

The animal presence, by the way, extends well beyond the traditional cows, horses and pigs, with contests featuring dogs, cats, rabbits and pigeons.

Besides all that, there will be plenty of rides, games and food, with $4 for adults the highest admission fee charged. Active members of the military get free admission daily, as do children age 8 and younger. Seniors age 60 and older and veterans will be admitted free on Thursday. Passes also are available for multiple admission fees and ride tickets.

For those students, not to mention parents and teachers, who aren’t able to get to the fair before school begins, don’t despair. You’ll still have plenty of opportunities next weekend to take in the state’s second-largest county fair and squeeze in some bonus summer fun before the too-short season ends.
