Lorain County Flooding Possible Sunday, Monday

The remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon could hit the Lorain County area hard.

AVON, OH —Two to five inches of rain could fall Sunday and Monday in Lorain County thanks to the remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon. Residents with flood-prone basements or sewers are being asked to plan ahead.

Tropical Storm Gordon made landfall on Tuesday, near the Mississippi-Alabama border. Thankfully, the storm did not pick up speed and did not become a hurricane when it made landfall. Some 27,000 people were without power in coastal Alabama this week.

Gordon has been moving north and is expected to hit the Great Lakes region toward the end of the weekend. The National Weather Service currently predicts a 90 percent chance of rain on Sunday and a 70 percent chance of rain on Monday.

"The remnants of Tropical Depression Gordon will approach the region over the weekend. Depending on the exact track of this system, heavy rain will be possible, and could lead to flooding on some area rivers. Stay tuned for updates as we monitor the track of this system," the NWS said Thursday morning.

The incoming storms will cause an increase in northeast winds on Friday, which will lead to a moderate swimming risk for Lake Erie beach visitors. Stronger winds are possible over the weekend, which could lead to higher swimming risks. Anyone planning a trip to area beaches will want to watch forecasts to ensure their safety.
