Top US counties have an average rate of premature death of 5,200 per 100,000 residents, according to County Health Rankings research. However, premature deaths have been increased across the US. The largest increase in premature deaths has been occurring in those aged 15-44, the organization says. Additionally, the premature death rate is increasing in both urban and rural communities and across all ethnic and racial groups.

The largest contributor to the spike in premature deaths is drug overdoses, which has led to large suburban metro counties leading the nation in the highest premature death rates.

"For those ages 15–24, an increase in drug overdose deaths was part of the equation, but more deaths due to motor vehicle crashes and firearm fatalities also played a role in the accelerated rise in premature death," the organization says.
