ELYRIA, OH — The Lorain County Sheriff's office recently received a $2,000 donation from the Fraternal Order of the Columbia Eagles. The money will be used to bolster the office's DARE program and its K9 program and to purchase equipment for sheriffs.

"I want to publicly thank the officers and members of the Columbia Eagles for their kind donation as they are keenly aware of the community's needs and support many agencies," said Lorain County Sheriff Phil Stammitti.

The spread of the new coronavirus prompted the Eagles to make their annual donation sooner than usual.

"Normally the donations wouldn’t have come out until the end of May. We wanted to make sure this donation came out soon because we didn’t know how they might use that money," said David Hammond, one of the three trustees of the Fraternal Order of the Columbia Eagles.

This is not the first time the Eagles have donated to the sheriff's office, according to Stammitti. He said their support was much appreciated.

Hammond told Patch the sheriff's office was chosen to receive a donation because of how much they do to protect and support the community.

The Lorain County Sheriff's office recently expanded its DARE program to include schools in Elyria and Lorain. The program already covered many of the townships throughout Lorain County, according to Stammitti.
