Marcy Kaptur To Speak At Veterans Gathering On Memorial Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Marcy Kaptur will be the keynote speaker during a special Memorial Day Observance at the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 27. The event will remember and pay tribute to the 400,000 Americans that lost their lives in World War II. The ceremony is free and open to the public.

Kaptur, a Democrat from the Lorain area, was the catalyst for the creation of the World War II Memorial. She introduced legislation in 1987 that spurred the construction of the monument on the National Mall. Kaptur's bill was signed into law in 1993 by President Bill Clinton and Kaptur has been an advocate for the memorial ever since.

During the event, a dozen World War II veterans will lay wreaths at the Freedom Wall, in remembrance of their fallen brothers and sisters.

There will also be remarks from Friends of the National World War II Memorial Chairman Josiah Bunting III and Jeffery Reinbold, the acting superintendent of the National Mall and Memorial Parks. ABC7 news anchor Jonathan Ellis will be Master of Ceremonies. The Military District of Washington will provide military support for the event.
