Mitchell's Ice Cream Shop Opens in Avon

Mitchell's Homemade Ice Cream has officially opened on Detroit Road in Avon and by Friday, lines were forming with patrons ready to try the well-known ice cream.

Brothers Pete and Mike Mitchell opened their seventh location in a large, brand-new building in front of the Avon Commons near and on May 10.

Plans for the Avon location, which employs 25, began in June 2011.

“We are very excited to be opening a shop in Avon,” Mitchell said last fall. “We feel it is a thriving community. Over the years we have had many requests from customers who drive to our Westlake shop or Rocky River shop, that they would love to have a Mitchell's closer to their home.”

Mitchell and his brother opened their first Mitchell's Ice Cream shop in Westlake in 1999.

“We thought it would be fun to make and sell ice cream in the city we have called home for most of our lives," he said in a previous article. "We had no experience to speak of, but believed if we set our minds to it and dedicated ourselves fully to what we were doing, we'd be able to learn to make ice cream well and run a local retail ice cream company.”

The company also owns shops in Beachwood, Rocky River, Solon, Westlake, Strongsville and Huntington Beach in Bay Village. The ice cream also retains in grocery stores.

Mitchell's prides itself on its local flavor and appeal. Besides its unique ice cream flavors, Mitchell's serves fat-free and dairy-free fruit sorbets, low-fat frozen yogurts, sundaes, shakes and malts, double-dip sodas, fresh fruit smoothies, and homemade ice cream cakes and pies.

That local appeal has spelled success for the company. It has been recognized as Cleveland's best ice cream for many years by Cleveland Magazine, Cleveland Scene, The Plain Dealer, Cleveland Jewish News, and other publications.

The Avon location is open Sunday through Thursday, 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
