Nagel Road Bridge Demolition Underway

The first big step in the  project has begun.

Demolition of the  over Interstate 90 has begun. Don Damyanic, the city's construction manager for the project, gave Avon Patch a tour of the south end of the bridge, just north of Nagel Road.

The pavement has been removed over the eastbound lanes of Interstate 90 so far, with only the bright blue steel beams remaining. Work has begun on the pavement over the westbound lanes. A temporary ledge under the beams is designed to keep pieces of concrete from falling onto the highway and cars below.

The bridge will be closed for the duration of the project, which is expected to run into 2013.

While Avon City Council approved the possibility of an agreement with Westlake to , Damyanic reminds people that it has not happened yet and the earliest it will happen is spring of 2012.

Avon Road remains closed at the border and that Nagel is closed to thru traffic north of Detroit Road.

Damyanic said  have also begun ticketing truck drivers who are ignoring the "Road closed to thru traffic" sign and then trying to turn around either at the Avon Road intersection or near the county-line barrier on Avon Road.
