New Census Numbers Say Avon Lake Is More Diverse, But Remains Mostly White
The U.S. Census Bureau released new numbers this week on racial groups.

While Avon Lake experienced a whopping 24.4 percent population increase from 2000 to 2010, it remains a largely white community, although new Census data indicates the city is slightly more diverse now than it was 10 years ago.
The U.S. Census Bureau released more detailed statistics for Ohio from the 2010 Census, including new data for racial groups in Avon Lake.
The bureau says the new data offers a "new layer of detail" to the population and housing data released last year as part of the decennial population study.

1. Avon Lake is largely white, but diversity is growing
Avon Lake is not considered a diverse community, and the numbers back up that claim.
Avon Lake has 22,581 people, according to the Census. While 21,620 people, or 96.7 percent, describe themselves as white. The Census counted 544 Hispanics, 248 residents who stated they were black or African American and 283 Hispanics.
In 2000, .5 percent of residents were black, 1.2 percent was Asian and 1.2 percent was Hispanic (total 2.7 percent). In 2010, 1.1 percent was black, 1.3 percent Asian
and 2.4 percent of the residents listed themselves as Hispanic.
2. Hispanics have largest families; whites have smallest families
In Avon Lake, 102 households are Asians, with 82 percent of those being families. Husband-wife families make up 74.5 percent of total Asian households. The average Asian household size is 2.92 while the average family size is 3.25.
Hispanics make up 131 households in Avon Lake with 101 (77.1 percent) of those defined as “family.” Of the 131 households, 74 (56.5 percent) are a husband-wife family. The average household size is 3.1 and the average family size is 3.46.
According to the Census, there are 248 blacks or African Americans in Avon Lake, residing in 90 households. Forty-two households (46.7 percent) are a husband-wife family. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.4.
There are 8,628 white households in the city; with 6,113 of those defined as family households. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.04.
3. Whites have highest home ownership rate; blacks have lowest
Most homes in Avon Lake are owner-occupied with 7,317 (82.2 percent) having that designation. Census information released this week said 82.8 percent of whites own their own home, 81.4 of Asian households, 60.3 percent of Hispanics and 53.3 of blacks.
