Rep. Marcy Kaptur In Car Accident In Toledo

The longest serving woman in the U.S. House was taken to a hospital as a precaution. She will return to work on Thursday.

TOLEDO, OH — Rep. Marcy Kaptur was involved in a car accident while driving through Toledo on Wednesday. The 73-year-old politician was not badly hurt in the crash and will resume her normal schedule on Thursday morning.

According to her office, Kaptur was on W. Bancroft Street, in a single lane construction zone, when a backhoe swung into her lane and hit the windshield of Kaptur's car. She was taken to a hospital for treatment as a precaution.

"She is doing well and will resume her normal schedule in the morning," Kaptur's office said.

The backhoe was being operated by a contractor. Police and fire were on the scene quickly, Kaptur's office said.

"Congresswoman Kaptur extends thanks to the professional first responders from Toledo Police and Fire Departments who offered immediate assistance," a statement from Kaptur's office said.

Kaptur, a Democrat, is the longest serving woman in the U.S. House of Representatives. Her district stretches along the coast of Lake Erie and includes parts of Cuyahoga, Lorain, Ottawa and Lucas counties. Both Lakewood and Lorain are part of her district.
