Scam Artist Targets 68-Year-Old In Avon Lake
The man paid for "virus protection upgrades" over the phone with a check.

AVON LAKE, OH — A resident fell victim to a common fraud scheme last week. Someone claiming to work in the tech industry called Hyannis Port Drive man and told him his computer was due for an upgrade on its virus protection. The resident believed the caller.
The resident agreed to pay for the upgrade over the phone, using a check. Except, the man later learned that he did not need any of the services he was paying for.
The man then called his bank. He learned that someone had written a check from one of his bank accounts and deposited the check he sent over the phone.

The man asked his bank to investigate, but bank officials told the man he first had to file a police report.
