Scam Costs Avon Lake Resident $1,000

AVON LAKE, OH — Scammers cost an Avon Lake resident a $1,000 in September.

On Sept. 20, an Inwood Boulevard resident contact police and said she had been the victim of an online scam. The woman said she lost $1,000 in the con. Detectives are now investigating what happened to the woman.

Police are investigating two other recent scams in the city.

On Sept. 19, a Yoder Boulevard woman reported that someone applied for a loan through the Small Business Administration using her personal information. The woman has not suffered any financial loss because of the scam, police said.

On Sept. 8, a local car dealership reported that someone passed a bad check at the business.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost recently warned Ohioans that scammers were using both COVID-19 and the November election to perpetrate scams. Con artists have also been using robocalls to target as many people as possible.

Here's how Ohioans can protect themselves from robocall scams:

• Never interact with a suspected scam robocaller in any way.
• Carefully review terms and conditions when opting-in on websites that request a telephone number.
• Research services offered by your phone provider or apps to block unwanted calls.
• Register your phone number with the Do Not Call Registry online at DoNotCall.gov or by phone at 1-888-382-1222. However, know that political and polling/research calls from live callers are generally permitted as exceptions to the Do Not Call laws but robocalls to mobile numbers require prior express consent.
